Mid-Shannon
This is a fabulous stretch of water, deep and wide, meandering slowly through unspoilt
countryside between Loughs Ree and Derg. There are many quiet backwaters, too, and
the River Suck joins the Shannon at Shannonbridge. Access is generally good, especially
around the towns of Athlone, Shannonbridge, Banagher and Portumna.
Around Portumna is the place for big weights of quality bream. Shoals of roach and
hybrids feed all year round, and many more move out of Lough Derg and into the river in
spring and summer. There are quality roach to 2lbs, and some stonking hybrids.
The river fishes best when there’s a bit of flow, usually from March to October, but on
warm overcast summer days Lough Derg will be better, particularly for bream.
The Fishing
The Shannon has been renowned for its
bream fishing in the past, but whilst the big
bream shoals are still there, the roach and
hybrid fishing in recent years has improved
no end. This adds variety and good fishing
over a longer season.
With “improved” sewage systems and the
introduction of zebra mussels the Shannon is
running much clearer. This does not affect the
roach fishing, but it does mean anglers must
rethink their bream tactics.
On bright clear days you have to fish early
and late, even through the night when the
big bream shoals come in close to shore.
Otherwise you will find the bream will feed
on dull days particularly if you have a facing
breeze which colours up the water. The River Shannon always fishes best
when it carries a moderate flow. If its still or
backing up, fish the nearby lakes. The quieter
backwaters have some good rudd and tench.
